Oscillations and Waves

• Oscillation = a repeating motion, back and forth

• Wave:

  • Like wave on water

• Plotting Height:

  • $h(x,t)$$h(x,t)$ , a function of $x$$x$ and $t$$t$
  • $h$$h$ is something other than $x$$x$ or $t$$t$
  • In this case , $h$$h$ is height

• Usually a wave consists of many "crests" , but it can be just a single crest or a few crests and still be a wave

• Usually, we'll use sinusoidal waves

• Note: a cosine is just a shifted sine wave:

• So when we use the term "sinusoidal" , it includes waves that start out looking like a sine. And they change with time anyways
